Syntax or semantics?
Posted by Tony on 28th September 2004 at 11:41:03
In recent weeks, my side project has been a more fine grained look at implementation issues that flow originally from Winograd and Flores's discussion of "conversations for action" via my 1997 Conversation Piece, informed by the ever changing economics of information and communication technologies. At the heart of the question is how meaning might emerge and the thread linked below includes links to a few approaches by well known players.

Before spotting that thread, I already had half a plan to test one of my hypotheses with a pair of Google searches, the result summaries for which gave:

  • 6,320,000 for "black and white"
  • 414,000 for "white and black"
the point of which is to help us recognise that there are subtleties of real language use which continue to evade the attention of leading linguistic theorists. Are such orderings culturally dependent?
