And it also has to be repeated that Mathematica just isn't that great. It's dangerous to have an "assumed excellent" tool, "polished" for optimal marketability, with all kinds of problems swept under a proprietary carpet (see sci.math.symbolic for regular examples).

Is Mathematica the Windows Vista 7 of applied math? There doesn't seem to be any difference in either development or business methodology.
